Why Build Healthy?

Green building is the most important national trend in the construction industry. A "green" building places a high priority on health, environmental and resource conservation performance over its lifecycle. Four factors are accelerating the movement to green design and construction:

Consumer Demand Drives Builder Demand

According to the National Association of Home Builders, homebuyers increasingly demand that environmental issues become a top priority in new construction and remodeling efforts. Builders are stepping in to meet that demand. For instance, the green building initiative in Colorado predicted that 6000 new green homes would be built in that state alone in 2005. Legislation/LEED

The US Green Building Council (USGBC) launched the voluntary Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification program to set standards for and promote green building. Many states and municipalities now require that all new public buildings meet certain LEED requirements. Healthy Buildings' wood-cement ICF may contribute to 3 of 5 LEED categories required for LEED certification.

Mold Liability Costs

Building owners seek to reduce the liability associated with mold. “Mold issues have always been a part of any construction defect litigation practice, but not in the numbers we see now,” says Peter R. Spanos, a partner with the Atlanta law firm Burr & Forman. “The differences are the claims and huge awards for personal injury.” (Buildings, October 2003) The potential liability is so large that mold coverage is now excluded from most building insurance policies. The wood-cement ICF does not support mold growth due to its high pH.
